Musculoskeletal & Peripheral Nerve Ultrasound provides real-time diagnostic imaging of joints, periarticular soft tissues and accessible peripheral nerves of the upper and lower limbs.

The examination can assess tendons and their attachment sites, ligaments, bursae, muscles, joint fluid, synovium, selected accessible cartilage surfaces, cysts and other superficial soft-tissue structures. In the knee, ultrasound can also evaluate structures such as the patellar tendon and accessible portions of the infrapatellar (Hoffa’s) fat pad.

It can identify findings such as tendon thickening or tearing, tenosynovitis, bursitis, joint effusion, synovial changes, calcific deposits, cysts and selected ligament or muscle injuries.

Peripheral nerve ultrasound assesses the course, size and internal structure of accessible nerves and can demonstrate findings associated with nerve enlargement, compression, entrapment, displacement or abnormal movement.

Because the examination is performed in real time, selected tendons, joints and nerves can also be observed dynamically during movement. The findings help establish which anatomical structure is involved and can guide the decision between conservative treatment, an ultrasound-guided procedure, additional imaging or specialist referral.
